Today, January 6, 2021, supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the United States Capitol building, causing members of the Senate and House to evacuate. The building was placed on lockdown as supporters vandalized and occupied the building. This occurred on the same day Congress was expected to certify President-elect Joe Biden as the winner of the presidential election. Before Trump supporters occupied the building, Trump held a rally in Washington, D.C., urging supporters to march to the Capitol and make their voices “peacefully and patriotically” make their voices heard, while also urging them to “fight like hell”. At the time of the riot, the House and Senate were debating objections to Arizona’s electors, which were raised by Paul Gosar and Ted Cruz. Vice President Mike Pence and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi evacuated. Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter, was shot in the building during the riot. The Capitol was placed on lockdown, and in the evening, Congress resumed session and continued debating objections to Arizona’s electors, which was defeated 6-93 in the Senate and 121-303 in the House.
